BPC-157 research background
BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157, sometimes “Bepecin”) was described in the early 1990s by Predrag Sikirić and colleagues at the University of Zagreb. It is a synthetic fragment whose sequence was taken from a region of a larger protein isolated from human gastric juice. The great majority of the published literature comes from that single research group, which is worth knowing when weighing the evidence base: independent replication remains thin.
The published work has examined rodent models of gastrointestinal, tendon, ligament and muscle injury; expression of growth-factor genes and nitric-oxide-system markers in animal tissue; and interactions with dopaminergic and serotonergic markers in animal brain. Almost all of it is in rats. A 2023 review by the Australian medicines regulator concluded that there was insufficient human safety data to permit compounding. These are laboratory findings in cells and animals; they have not been replicated in controlled human trials, and no conclusions about human effects should be drawn from them.
For researchers, BPC-157 is an easy peptide to work with. The sequence contains no methionine, cysteine or tryptophan, so there is no oxidation problem; it is proline-rich and therefore resistant to many proteases; it dissolves readily in water; and it gives a single clean HPLC peak with an unambiguous [M+H]+ near 1420 on the mass spectrum, which makes lot-to-lot comparison straightforward.
Handling and storage: Lyophilized powder in a sealed vial. Store at −20 °C for long-term storage or at 2–8 °C for short-term storage, protected from light and moisture. Allow the vial to reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.
